With a population of 47,380 (according to the 2000 Census), Binghamton, New York, stands as the cultural and political center of the Greater Binghamton area. Binghamton's rich Victorian history is well- preserved, giving visitors a glimpse back in time. The city is also conveniently located near the forests and lakes that give upstate New York its reputation for being a scenic getaway for city dwellers.

Roberson Museum Science Center & Link Planetarium A culmination of arts, history and science, the Roberson Museum and Science Center houses an arts and cultural center, Roberson's historic mansion, a heritage center, planetarium and science center. In 1954, at the time of center's opening, the nearby Binghamton Museum of Fine Arts transferred all of its collections to Roberson. Galleries and a theater were added in 1966, in addition to the Link Planetarium. The planetarium uses a star projector to replicate the night sky in public and educational programs. A 1996 renovation of Roberson Mansion's carriage house led to the creation of Clayworks, a pottery studio. At this time the Binghamton Visitor Center was added; here visitors can learn about the Susquehanna Heritage Area through interactive exhibits.

Broome County Arena & Forum The largest events complex in the area, the Broome County Arena & Forum have hosted the likes of Bruce Springsteen and classic rock band Chicago. The arena holds 7,200 and is home to the local NHL hockey team, the Binghamton Senators. The Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra's Pop Series, Tri-Cities Opera and Broadway Theater League are all tenants ofthe Forum, making the theater the cultural seat of the area.

Chenango Valley State Park Chenango State Park, an environmental wonder created by glaciers, is near Binghamton. The park encompasses two kettle lakes, which were formed by the buried ice the last glacier of the area left behind. The park is exceptional for birding, featuring woodpeckers, herons, ducks and warblers. Fishing fans can find trout, perch, bullhead and bass in Chenango Lake. The park also has hiking trails, an 18- hole golf course, ice skating, cross-country skiing and sledding. There are 216 campsites and 24 cabins on the park grounds.
